If I had to give it a rating out of five, it would get a five. Seriously, if you want another piece of evidence as to why the 1990s were the best decade in the history of gaming, just check out “Tyrian 2000”.

Best of all, it’s completely free too ( and not in that horrible modern “free-to-play” way), so there’s really no excuse for not playing it. The gameplay is simple enough to be casually enjoyable, but also complex and challenging enough to be enjoyed during longer play sessions. Plus, your ship also has an English accent too, which is kind of a rare thing in old-school computer games.Īll in all “Tyrian 2000” is an amazingly fun game. The voice-acting in these parts of the game is fairly ok (even if the ship’s computer occasionally sounds slightly bored). If you find this hard to believe, just listen to it on Youtube and tell me that you don’t instantly want to play old computer games.Īlthough there isn’t much in the way of voice-acting in this game, your ship’s computer will occasionally say things like “danger” and “unexplained speed increase”. In fact, that music may have been the thing that made me curious about “Tyrian 2000” in the first place. Interestingly, the first time I heard a song from this game’s soundtrack was when I played an absolutely excellent “Doom II” WAD and later found out that some of the amazing music in this WAD was originally from “Tyrian 2000”. In other words, after playing this game for a while, don’t be surprised if you still see spaceships and projectiles whenever you close your eyes.įinally, the game has a really great soundtrack. One thing I will warn you about is that, if you play this game for more than a few minutes, you’ll probably start to experience a mild version of the “ Tetris effect“. Not only that, “Tyrian 2000” seems to introduce a new type of enemy every level or two, which really helps to prevent the gameplay from becoming dull or repetitive. Many of them are just robots, turret guns and spaceships that sometimes shoot projectiles at you, but they come in all shapes and sizes. Like in many great games from the 1990s, there’s also a creative array of enemies on offer here.

OpenTyrian is an excellent port for Android of an awesome PC classic. You also have an arcade mode where you can complete nonstop missions, without following any sort of story line.
The game includes five episodes, each with its own final boss and tons of different weapons for you to combine (you almost always have two at a time). You have to have some skill if you want to dodge the hundreds of shots coming at you all at once. All the movements and shots are made using touch controls. The main gameplay is typical for the genre: your spaceship is located at the bottom of the screen and your enemies come at you from above and the sides.

Your goal is to advance though a series of levels full of enemies and dangers while shooting at basically everything that moves. OpenTyrian is a free and open-source version of the classic Tyrian, a SHMUP (shoot 'em up) that puts you behind the controls of a spaceship.
